Green Exhibiting Tips

Pollution and carbon emissions have worked to move our planet along the road to irrevocable damage at an increasingly alarming rate. The events industry is one of the world’s worst offenders when it comes to generating refuse and pollution.
At UBM International Media, we thrive to constantly renew our commitment to promoting greener events. For this reason, we have compiled a number of tips for our exhibitors, which we hope will help us all contribute to creating a better environment.
- Only bring printed materials if absolutely necessary – instead try communicating verbally about your company, setting up an informational display, or directing attendees to online resources. If printing is a must , here are some tips for doing it green:
- Remove the dates from collateral you might be able to use again.
- Whenever possible, print double sided
- If you can't avoid colour printing, eliminate dark blues, red and purples which inhibit the de-inking process
- Print marketing materials on certified recycled paper using eco-friendly printers and ink.
- Implement a waste management strategy to ensure that packaging is kept to a minimum and as much as possible is recycled including computer supplies and redundant equipment.
- Limit the purchase of bottled water. Instead, order a water cooler for your booth.
- Turn off computers, equipment and lights when not in use. Both in your booth and in your hotel room!
- Choose promotional materials that can be re-used or consumed during the event. Choose earth friendly giveaways.
- Choose natural materials over plastics.
- Use low-impact, renewable and recyclable products in the construction of, and within, the booth structure.
- Encourage your booth builder to apply environmentally friendly principles in the design of your stand such as low-voltage lighting, maximum of re-usable elements such as hard walls, etc. Ask your booth builder to provide you with information about how they can reduce the environmental impact of your stand.
- Recycle disposable items, such as carpet, at the end of their life.
- Donate usable items locally.
- Join a “Next Show” shipping service and consolidate your freight with other exhibitors going to the same next destination to reduce the freight cost and carbon foot print.
- Perform an audit of your trade show practices and commit to a multi-step plan to phase a higher level of greenness each year.
